Rottnest Island Wadjemup is highly valued by Western Australians, as well as drawing national and international visitors. The island contains a number of State Registered places which relate to its natural landscape and its varied history and uses including as an agricultural settlement, prison, pilot service, defence base, and tourism precinct. The Rottnest Island Authority plays an important role in balancing the heritage significance of the island with the ongoing environmental, economic, tourism and day to day management demands.

As part of the National Tourism Icons project, State and Federal funding was allocated to six key development sites where endorsement by the Heritage Council of Western Australia would play a key role. We are the Heritage Architect advisors for these projects and play an active role in the design review and heritage approvals processes. This includes the preparation of heritage impact statements and facilitation of consultation processes. As the projects move into the delivery phase, we will provide on-site advice and oversee the works to ensure best practice heritage outcomes.

We continue to work with the Rottnest Island Authority to review, approve and deliver compelling heritage outcomes in a way that acknowledges the island’s complex and layered history, as well as respects and enhances the multi-faceted heritage values of the landscape. We are focusing on retaining the heritage values of the island while balancing contemporary requirements for change. The current scope of works is identified for delivery by December 2021.
