The Project
The Shire of Ashburton were successful in the receipt of funding from WaterCorp and Regional Arts WA to fund the painting of their iconic water tanks. Following an initial procurement, complications resulted in the need to restart the process. At this stage, element was brought on board to ensure the commission was managed in line with industry standard practice to get the best possible outcome for the Shire.
The tanks, positioned at the intersection of Onslow and Macedon Road, are highly visible. The resulting artworks are a major asset for the Shire as the entry statements to the town of Onslow. Therefore, it was critical to work closely with the Shire and community to select and develop the artwork.
Our Role
Our team worked closely with the Shire to release a call-out for community members for an Artwork Selection Working Group to guide the selection of artists and the final design on behalf of the community. We also engaged community through survey and consultation to inform the priorities for the selection process. From there, our team managed an Expression of Interest for WA Artists, from which the Working Group selected a shortlist. element then worked closely with the Shire and selected artist to managing contracting and relevant approvals, develop the artwork in line with feedback, to ensure the successful delivery and installation of the murals.
Outcomes
The process resulted in the successful contracting of Jerome Davenport to paint the two murals, which were completed in October 2022.
