The Project

The Knutsford Precinct is located on the eastern periphery of Fremantle and its comprehensive planning is envisioned to transform the area from an old industrial area into a world class example of sustainable living. Embracing the One Planet Living concept, all planning and development of Knutsford projects have strived to achieve sustainable outcomes above and beyond what is now considered standard.

Our Role

element was engaged by DevelopmentWA to provide the full suite of project implementation services, including planning and urban design expertise in relation to the preparation of conceptual development plans, superlot and individual subdivision applications and development approvals for a portion of the former Navy Fuel Depot and Museum sites, Fremantle. Our work involved detailed site testing and analysis, facilitation of workshops with key stakeholders, and illustration of potential redevelopment opportunities for development forms that were/are highly contemporary and atypical for the location.

We were then engaged by OP Properties to progress a development application for a five storey development within Stage 2, comprising 39 apartments and a commercial tenancy. This development is set to be one of the first Carbon Neutral apartment buildings in Australia. 20 per cent of the apartments have been designed to cater for residents with additional mobility needs like the elderly or people living with disabilities.

Outcomes

Knutsford is well on its way to delivering densities that are well-above average for the area, with Stage 1 complete and Stage 2 receiving recent approvals. The outcomes demonstrate how design excellence can be achieved while creating a sense of place, embodying environmental awareness and ensuring economic viability. This is a testament to the team’s careful design management to achieve high end community supportable outcomes, as well as directly responding to market responsive advice to provide a qualitative form based approach to delivering more ‘characterful’ built form outcomes the local Fremantle community is searching for.

Implementation of this project involved collaboration with an extensive consultant team, with the Client’s values addressed at each stage.
