This project involved managing Claremont Railway Station (1886), the oldest extant railway station in Perth, a precinct of considerable heritage significance which is on the State Register of Heritage Places. As part of their ongoing METRONET program, the PTA is undertaking a staged upgrade of Claremont Railway Station. The redevelopment is in progress (2020).

element provided a variety of heritage services including identifying the opportunities and constraints; heritage advice to design team and stakeholders; post lodgement services including presentations to Heritage Council of Western Australia; design review and development assessment committees; and ongoing peer review of architectural and sub-consultant detailed design. We were then engaged by the PTA as the upgrade progressed into the detailed design phase, which involved site visits to confirm heritage details and heritage specifications, and the preparation of a set of heritage conservation works and details to feed into the overall architectural documentation set.

Our ability and expertise in assessing the impact of proposed changes to a heritage listed place assisted our client to navigate and satisfy the feedback and requirements of various heritage processes and stakeholder interests. element successfully guided the client towards an outcome which is respectful of the heritage values of the place while achieving their desired operational upgrades. Our design expertise delivered a comprehensive set of heritage works drawings, accommodating both adaptive aims and conservation requirements.
