City of Armadale Public Art Procurement
The Project
Incorporating the coastal plains, foothills and part of the picturesque Perth hills, the Armadale region encompasses approximately 545 square kilometres, uniting the Perth metropolitan area with the south-east of regional Western Australia.
It is a place of diversity and charm, poised for significant and ongoing economic and population growth. Just a short train ride or 30-minute drive from the Perth CBD, the region provides an active and diverse urban city centre for visitors, residents and workers.
The City of Armadale have a valued collection of public art which contributes to the town centre and community.
Our Role
On behalf of the City of Armadale we managed the procurement of a major artwork commission by Western Australian artist Si Hummerston, for a prominent intersection in the City centre.
The artwork was procured through an open tender, followed by an artist shortlisting by a public art selection panel, consisting of key City of Armadale team members including the Mayor and CEO, under the guidance of the element team.
Outcomes
The resulting artwork is highly visible and as such will gain considerable attention. This was a major consideration in the selection of the artwork by the public art panel and required consideration from the community’s perspective.
The management of a public art panel involves mediating and negotiating diverse priorities and perspectives, to achieve a unanimous decision. The panel were able to agree without dispute on the final artwork, following artist presentations and a facilitated panel discussion.
The resulting artwork has been well received by the community and now acts as a landmark within the local precinct.
